Thoughts about the LIVE earlier today (and a question)

June 09, 2025

First off, thank you all who participated. You were a great group! The mix of personality, insight and mutual respect... good to have lots of adults in the room :)

By the time we came up to the 90 minute mark, I had forgotten to ask you a specific question, following Anthony's point about my Hermeneutics 101 being a bit theoretical (very true). Anthony mentioned the need to find a way to translate it practically into good interpretation. About that: I've been toying with putting together a master class in interpretation that makes explicitly that bridge that Anthony called for.

There are some practical resources out there (many outright woeful, even by scholars). I fear that hardly any published resources or taught classes bring heavy duty hermeneutics to the interpretive "game" (and into dialog with practical hands-on interpretation). I can think of just one that may be a candidate, and I'll consult it again to see if it actually succeeds on this front. The author is a former colleague of mine, and I know it's a solid piece per se. Will report back.

Question: do you guys (whether you attended today or not) agree that a master class in bridging hermeneutics and Bible study would be a good priority for Prohibition Theology in the near term, alongside the further development of the current courses? Anything else you would add to that list of one? I'm not running out of things to do anytime soon. I would simply love to hear from you about your pain points in matters of biblical interpretation and how to address them!

Meanwhile, I remain convinced that better hermeneutics is the single best key for unlocking better theology.

Thank you all! Looking forward to the next one (LIVE)!
